Energy transition in Rwanda driven by German technology: OneShore Energy and BayWa r.e. implement PV diesel hybrid system

Berlin-based OneShore Energy and BayWa r.e. have installed a PV diesel hybrid pilot system in Rwanda, which will supply one of the country's biggest tea factories with clean solar electricity.

This will allow up to 22,000 kilograms of CO2 to be saved every year. Whilst BayWa r.e. is supplying the PV components for the system, OneShore Energy's software solution enables the consumption-optimised design and efficient operation of the plant, which significantly reduces the total cost of the project.

"Sorwathe is one of the leading tea factories in Rwanda. We utilise power both from the grid and from our diesel generators, which produce a high level of emissions. Our goal was to reduce the factory's carbon footprint, save costs and move towards a more sustainable energy supply. The PV diesel hybrid system is the optimum solution for our tea factory because it significantly increases the proportion of environmentally responsible solar electricity we use and allows us to reduce our consumption of diesel and traditionally supplied electricity. Together with our German partners, we are delighted to be able to establish Sorwathe as a producer of on-site cleaner, more innovative energy in East Africa," stated Rohith Peiris, General Director of Sorwathe Ltd.

We are proud of this hybrid system implemented by Sorwathe and OneShore." stated Gerardine Mukeshimana, Rwanda's Minister for Agriculture and Animal Resources, who presided over the opening ceremony of the project as the government's representative.  

"In rapidly developing countries like Rwanda, electricity supply from the grid is often not sufficient and industrial players also use diesel generators. Adding a hybrid solar system reduces both types of electricity consumption. Our software digitises the entire design process, from measuring loads, to engineering, to operating the PV diesel hybrid system. It results in an optimised system to suit our customers' requirements. Because all the data is available at a glance, our products also provide customers and investors with greater transparency," explained Philipp Kunze, Managing Director of OneShore Energy. OneShore's software package includes the OneAnalyser, OneDesign and OneOptimiser modules.

This project is part of the worldwide dena Renewable Energy Solutions Programme coordinated by Deutsche Energie-Agentur (dena) - the German Energy Agency - and co-financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) within the „renewables – Made in Germany“ initiative.
